Ruff Risotto

Ruff Risotto

Jump to Recipe

If you have been following me on Facebook, I am always trying to minimise the amount of additives and preservatives my kids consume. I thought little about doing the same for my fur babies – my dogs! The idea of making home-made food for them came when they started to go a bit funny after a (rather long) period of having canned wet food from the supermarkets. It was great initially – the tin cans were always on special and it was convenient having everything pre-packaged. Then one of my pooches gained a lot of weight and started to sniff its nose at the food. Then the other would make the most smelliest of poos! At this point, I decided to up the ante when it came to their food and one of the decisions I made was to ditch the canned food.

Ruff Risotto was something I created based on what my pooches liked to eat and what was safe for them. This meal is not a complete substitute for dog food; it is something I give my dogs to supplement their main source of food, being dog biscuits, which is formulated and has the nutrients they truly need. I have not put a serving size to this recipe as it will depend on various factors such as the size and appetite of your fur baby, as well as how much of this you wish to give them.

No two pets are the same so while this recipe works for my pets and maybe some others, it may not necessarily work for yours. Before you commence serving this to your precious fur babies, please take the time to read the recipe and see if it is suitable to them. If you are unsure, please refer to your pet’s vet.

NOTES AND VARIATIONS

Allowing garlic in dog food is a hot topic of debate among pet owners. I have given them to my pooches and while they are OK with it, others may not be. If this is the case for your pet, please omit this ingredient and continue on with the recipe.

Once cooled and prior to serving, I like to mix through the risotto some raw meats (minced or diced beef, kangaroo, chicken, pork, lamb), offal (mainly chicken livers) or tinned fish (tuna and sardines).
